Moving to Saudi Arabia? Six Things to Check Before You Accept

For Finance and Internal Audit professionals: your career, your family and your offer, the three questions to answer before you say YES TO AN OFFER.

Almost every week, we speak with Finance and Audit professionals who are seriously considering a role in Saudi Arabia. The offer usually looks good: a higher salary, a bigger title, a fast-growing company.

So what could go wrong? More than most people expect. A move abroad is harder to reverse than a local job change, your family is part of the decision and the rules for finance and audit professionals in the Kingdom are changing fast. One of them takes effect on 27 October 2026.

Here is the move as three questions, with six things to check before you accept.

Is this role right for my career?

1. Saudization now reaches senior finance and audit titles

From 27 October 2026, private-sector companies with five or more employees in accounting professions must fill 50% of those roles with Saudi nationals, up from 40%. The rate keeps rising each October until it reaches 70% in 2028. (MHRSD announcement summary ↗)

Many assume this affects only junior accountants. It does not. The covered professions include financial manager, financial controller, treasury manager, audit manager and internal audit manager, and coverage follows the work you actually do, not only the title on your contract.

It affects

Your own role

The title on your offer letter and the occupation registered with the Ministry are not always the same.

Ask: how will my role be classified on my work permit?

If you lead

A Finance or Internal Audit team

You will likely be accountable for the function's compliance, and building a Saudi talent pipeline may be part of the job.

Ask: where does the team stand against the 50% rate today?

2. SOCPA registration is part of your work licence

The rule

Expatriates in accounting professions must hold professional registration with the Saudi Organization for Chartered and Professional Accountants (SOCPA). It is checked when a work licence is issued or renewed, or when a profession is changed. (Ministry of HR policy ↗)

Qualifications such as ACA, ICAI, ACCA, CMA, ICAEW and AICPA are commonly accepted. But SOCPA verifies each certificate individually, and certificates issued outside the Kingdom can take time.

Keep yours ready, ask the employer who handles registration, and if your role includes zakat, tax or statutory work, ask whether further licensing applies.

Check your eligibility before you resign, not after.

Can my family make this move?

3. Your family's visas can now move with yours, if you qualify

On 6 October 2026, the Ministry of Interior announced that highly skilled expatriates can have eligible family members' visas processed together with their own: a spouse, sons under 25 and unmarried daughters. (Ministry of Interior ↗)

FAMILY VISAS FOR HIGHLY SKILLED EXPATRIATESBeforeYoumonths apartFamilyNowYou + familyvisas processed together · iqamas after arrival

For anyone relocating with family, this matters. In our own searches, we have seen strong candidates delay joining by months while their family's paperwork caught up.

But the rule applies to roles classified as highly skilled, not to every role. Three questions to ask:

Is my role classified as highly skilled?

This decides whether the new rule applies to you at all.

Will my family's visas be processed with mine?

Get the answer in writing before you set a joining date.

Who covers my family's visa and residence costs?

These add up quickly for a larger family.

4. Plan for housing and schooling first

The Riyadh rent rule

Since 25 September 2025, landlords within Riyadh's urban boundaries cannot increase rent on existing or new residential and commercial leases for five years, under rules approved by the Council of Ministers and overseen by the Real Estate General Authority. (REGA ↗)

Housing and school fees are usually a family's two largest costs. The freeze means the rent you sign is the rent you keep paying, but you still pay today's market rent on day one.

Get real quotes for two or three neighbourhoods near the office and your preferred schools, ask schools for current fees and waiting lists, and compare the totals with the allowances in your offer, not your basic salary.

Is the offer what it looks like?

5. Make sure the role is as big as the title

One finance head sits with the board and shapes strategy. Another mainly reports numbers decided elsewhere, by a group office or a family shareholder. Both can be good roles, but you should know which one you are accepting.

Reporting and approvals

Who do I report to, what is my approval limit, and who signs off the budget?

Board access

Will I present to the board or audit committee directly? For audit roles, can I raise findings without management approval?

Ownership and success

Who owns treasury, tax and banking relationships, and what does success look like in the first 12 months?

If the answers are vague, ask to meet a board member before you accept. A serious employer will expect the question.

6. Compare the total package, not the basic salary

Put every element side by side

Basic salary and how it splits from allowances · housing · school fees per child · transport · medical cover for your family · annual flights · bonus, and whether it has ever been paid · relocation costs · notice, probation and how your end-of-service award will be calculated.

Ask for the offer in writing with every element listed, and compare it with what you would give up by leaving.

Before you say YES

In short

Saudi Arabia offers real opportunities for experienced finance and audit professionals. The people who settle well are usually the ones who checked their career, their family and their offer before they signed, not after they arrived.
